Curanderismo and traditional Hispanic/Indigenous healing
Instructions
Each student will be required to submit a 2–3-page essay proposal on Canvas toward mid-course. This proposal will be developed and become the student’s final assignment. After reading the guidelines, the student will be able to prepare a final assignment proposal to be submitted as a mid-term assignment.
The written proposal should include the following sections:
A general title/theme/topic for your essay (this can change later if needed),
A short 100-150 word abstract explaining the general idea of what you will explore/propose in your final paper.
A research question or idea the student will explore in the final assignment,
An outline of the sections you would like to talk about in your paper that will answer your question or support your idea. At least 2 content sections for undergraduate students and 4 content sections for graduate students, not counting list of references, abstract, cover page, or any section that is not part of the content of your research.
A brief description of what you will talk about for each section. This is not an annotated bibliography in which you synthetize literature. You will describe a preliminary idea of what you will research about.
A draft bibliography showing the academic references you will use in your final essay in APA style. At least 5 references should be included at this stage for undergraduate students and 6 for graduate students. See additional bibliography provided by instructor.
Consider the following when writing your proposal:
Relate it to your own personal experience as well as your own needs/interests, however, you should not only use your personal experience but include it as supporting information to the academic literature on the topic you choose.
Relate your experience, interests or needs to the content learned in the course.
Format
You should use proper writing conventions and APA citing style.
The essays must be written by computer.
Use Times New Roman font.
The font size should be 12.
Use double spacing.
Margins should be one inch.
Include a list of references in APA format at the end of your essay.
The citations must follow APA format. See the orientation module for guidance on how to cite, quote and write a list of references using APA format.
By submitting a proposal, you will show your instructor what you will research about within Curanderismo and traditional Hispanic/Indigenous healing. The topic you choose must be related to the class. Your instructor will not give a topic to research or questions to answer. Instead, you will give your instructor the topic you will research and the questions you plan to answer. You are only submitting a proposal (a plan). You are not submitting an essay, or a finalized product at this point, only the proposal in the specified format. See example of a mid-term proposal above.
Assessment
The mid-term proposal is assessed using the mid-term proposal rubric. The submission of this assignment is in writing. You will be assessed based on meeting the requirements specified in the rubric and having met the requirements below. Submissions that do not include all sections required (see below) or that do not meet what is asked for each section as well as submissions that do not follow the format required and provided to you in the example above (see link above), may receive a lower grade.
What is the word count required?
There is no word count requirement for the proposal. You will be assessed based on the quality of your submission by meeting the requirements specified in the rubric and having addressed all items in the instructions & prompt section below. The only exception is the word count for the abstract although there is no word count for the proposal, just a page count.
Some different subjects covered in the course vary such as - Traditional bonesetting (Huesero), Native American Feather healing, Herbal Smoke for Healing, Afro-Latino healing through music and dance
