GUIDELINES- Oral History Project
This is a 2-part assignment:
· Part 1. Short essay (4 pages, double-spaced) (15%)
· Part 2. Poster (15%)
Part 1. Short essay (4 pages, double-spaced)
1. Read the book: Changing Times and Changing Lives in the Caribbean and Latin America. Edited by Judith Adler Hellman (posted in eClass)
2. Select 1 of the Ten Oral Histories included in the book.
3. Analyze the story, in the essay you will:
a) Describe the story
b) Do external research to further expand on any issue/theme addressed/mentioned in the story. For example, Chapter 7 refers to the Nicaragua Revolution. In the essay you need to add a section explaining the origin, causes, impacts, of the revolution.
c) Analyze the chapter’s content in light of the themes discussed in the course: you need to cite lectures, readings, group discussions, etc.
4. Essay Structure:
I. Introduction (.5/page):
· what is the purpose of the essay? To analyze/discuss what about the story?
· what are you going to argue in the essay?
· What are the key themes that connect to course content? Here you just mention them, you will analyze them in detail in the body of the essay
II. Body (3 pages)
· What is the story about?
· Expand your analysis on a specific topic mentioned in the story (e.g. describe what was the Nicaraguan revolution: when, why, outcomes)
· How does the story connect to course content?
III. Conclusion (just a short paragraph)
5. Format
- Include in your analysis/cite a minimum of:
· 2 course readings
· 1 other course content: lectures, group presentations, videos, etc.
· 2 external sources : 2 academic or 1 academic and 1 grey literature
- APA style
- Title page
- List of references
- 4 pages long, double-spaced not including title page and list of references
Part 2. Poster (15%)
Use the short essay to design and write a poster. In the poster you will expand on the analysis of a specific theme that you addressed in your short essay. For example, in the case mentioned above about the Nicaragua Revolution: your poster could focus on this specific theme, so you explain what it is, its impacts, implications, etc.
1. Structure: use the following SUBHEADINGS in your poster:
a) Background: What is the theme/issue that you will be presenting in the poster?
b) Objectives of your poster: to discuss? To present? WHAT?
c) Findings: What are the key findings you found about the issue?
d) Conclusion
e) References: add only 2
