Healthcare systems around the world are trying to strengthen six core building blocks. When these parts are improved, they can lead to the following:
-
Better quality of care
-
Greater access for patients
-
Fairness in how care is delivered
The elements require strategic, evidence-based thinking, similar to what is used in hospital administration roles. The goal is not just to define or describe the concepts but also to apply them to solve real problems that healthcare organizations face every day.
Begin by reviewing the scenario that pertains to the 6 building blocks of modern healthcare systems. As you prepare to write your analysis, consider how the following areas work together to support high-quality, equitable, and patient-centered care at medical Center:
-
Service delivery
-
Workforce development

Unit 1 IP Scenario
Review this scenario that will be used for your assignment this week.
Medical Center – Evolving Toward the Future of Healthcare
As a Healthcare Management Administrator in training at Medical Center (MC), you have been invited to the first planning session for “MC: Advancing the Future of Care.”
The hospital leadership explains this 5-year project. The project aims to keep the hospital modern and innovative for all patients.
They hand you a clipboard containing the six "building blocks" of the hospital and ask for your input on where to start. These six key areas are the foundation of modern medicine:
-
Service delivery
-
Workforce development
-
Health information systems
-
Technology
-
Financing
-
Governance
You look around the room at the doctors, tech experts, and financial planners. You realize that your job is to help all these people work together to improve the hospital’s service delivery and technology.
The chief executive officer (CEO) turns to you and says, “We have the latest medical tools, but our workforce is exhausted, and our health information systems are slow to update." You realize that the problem is not one person or one machine. It is about how the different parts of the hospital connect.
Different leaders have different priorities, as stated in the following:
-
The chief nursing officer (CNO) and chief marketing officer (CMO) want to improve quality and reduce burnout.
-
The chief information officer (CIO) wants to use technology more effectively but worries about alert fatigue.
-
The chief financial officer (CFO) wants to make sure that any changes are financially sustainable.
Now, it is time for your first big decision. The board of directors is looking to you for a recommendation.
-
Which area needs the most immediate innovation to ensure that the hospital stays high-quality and equitable?
As you prepare your response, you must consider how a change in one area, such as hiring more staff, will affect the hospital's budget and its ability to adapt to future changes in the medical world.
